A Swish New Business In the South of Western Australia

Whilst Western Australia summers are what we look forward to each year, there’s no doubt that flies are the bane of this enjoyable time.

Dropping on to the South West coastline like clockwork at the start of December, the buzzing hoards immediately put a damper on Bunbury residents’ love of the outdoors.

No cause to fear as South West resident Terry Stanley thinks he has the solution.

It’s called the Oz Swish, and no, it’s not a pom-pom. In fact, the Oz Swish, which doubles as a barracking devise at the cricket, keeps the flies at bay.

Mr Stanley took to making the prototype out of garden and old string, and whilst fishing at his local beach, tourists and locals would ask where they could get one.

Mr Stanley said his invention was a refined version of the traditional Peppi branch.

“I see a lot of walkers swishing away madly with any bit of coastal scrub they can find – this is the same idea,” he said.

“After a little while the flies leave you alone, because they’re not silly, they don’t like being hit all the time.”

Mr Stanley said about 10,000 fly nets were sold throughout the South West each year, and has set about carving out his niche in the market.

The Oz Swish is now available at most camping and sports shops in Bunbury.
