With the weather warming up, now is the time of the year that more people pack up their houses and move. If you’re one of these people getting ready to move house, and have organised your removalist, have you taken a look at the insurance policy you have and what it covers whilst in transit?
According to The Australian Furniture Removers Association, many Western Australian’s are not insured or are under insured, especially when it comes to moving house.
Finding out you are not adequately protected when a claim occurs, by either an accident or damage, is a harsh reality for many West Australians.
According to the AFRA, one of the most frequent complaints is that property has been damaged in a move and the customer has not taken out the appropriate insurance.
Many West Australians are under the impression that their property is covered by their home and contents insurance policy when they are moving.
However, this is not the case. Most, if not all, insurance policies insure your property whilst it is in the home. When moving, goods are in transit and are in a greater position to be damaged. Anyone who is moving, including renters, or those selling your home, or buying one, need to ensure that they take out Loss or Damage transit insurance.
It is also pointed out that whilst Removalist Companies ARE insured, their insurance does not cover damage or accidents to the property of their customers.
If you’re unsure of the policy you have with the insurance company, it is advised to phone them and discuss your existing policy and what needs to be done to ensure your property, when being moved, is insured.
