Plans to build a regional arts centre on the banks of the Leschenault Inlet were presented to council late last week. The proposed $28 million Bunbury Regional Arts Centre would include a permanent art gallery, convention centre, theatre and cafeteria.
It is hoped the centre will give Bunbury a reputation for its art and become an international draw-card, which is an alternative to the State Government’s plans for multi-storey apartments to be built on the site.
Many would love to see the new art gallery become home to Bunbury’s Regional Art Galleries and the City of Bunbury collections.
Local Bunbury businesspeople believe that if the community doesn’t show leadership by saying to the government what should be built on the site, then something will be built they don’t like and it’s gone forever.
Any rezoning of the site, which would allow future development, has not as yet been approved.
