Whale Watching Kicks Off in Perth

If you’ve experienced the exhilarating feeling of swimming, or even feeding, the dolphins in Bunbury, then you’ll love the majestic whales.

Did you know, in 1978, the humpback population was down to an estimated 200 when whaling was finally banned? Now, Western Australia boasts the biggest humpback population in the world with over 30,000 of these beautiful mammals.

If you’ve never gotten up close and personal with the biggest mammals of the ocean, then now is the time to do so.

Whale watching season is upon us. The humpbacks are returning to feeding grounds near Antartica after spending the winter months mating and calving off the Kimberley coast.

Large areas of WA’s coast, such as Camden Sound, 400km north of Broome, become giant whale nurseries between May and November. Because of the calves they have now, the whales travel slower and in shallower waters then they do during their northern migration.

The first whales to have left the Kimberley are now reaching Perth and others will continue to stream down the coastline on the southern migration until December.

Oceanic Cruises is running daily trips from Perth and Fremantle for around $50.
