Bunbury’s biggest eyesore – the old St John of God hospital – could be demolished in months to make way for three new developments, including apartments.
It is understood that Habitat International have put a proposal to the City of Bunbury to change the current plans, first drafted in 2006, to three separate buildings on each of the site’s three titles. Local contractors have been asked to provide quotations on the demolition which could see the cost reaching up to $1 million.
The new proposal would see the old hospital building converted into apartments.
So far, the city has not received an application for the demolition of the site.
Whilst residents of Bunbury have been campaigning for the demolition of the old building for more than three years, as yet, no formal discussions have been entered with developers. According to reports, the Mayor of Bunbury was told of the new plans last month but that the matter was not required to go before council as it did not need to be rezoned.
Whilst the demolition of the St John of God hospital would be a cause to celebrate, champagne remains unopened until the official go ahead is given.
